The History of the Island of Krk – An Island of Rich Past

The island of Krk has a rich and diverse history shaped by ancient civilizations, medieval rulers, and cultural heritage

The island of Krk, often called the "Golden Island,"

has a long and rich history that dates back to prehistoric times. It was inhabited as early as the time of the Illyrians, and in ancient times became an important Roman station. In the Middle Ages, Krk was ruled by various rulers, but the Frankopan noble family stands out in particular, leaving a deep mark on the island’s cultural and political history.

Krk is also known as the cradle of the Glagolitic script and an important center of Croatian literacy - the Baška tablet, one of the most important Croatian written monuments, even mentions King Zvonimir. Over the centuries, the island was under Venetian, Austrian, and Italian rule, until it finally became part of Croatia.

Today, Krk proudly preserves its rich heritage through numerous cultural landmarks, museums, cahurches, and traditional events.
